If you’re planning a new home or renovation, you may have heard the term NatHERS, but what exactly is it, and why should it matter to you?
Let’s break it down.
Understanding NatHERS
NatHERS stands for the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme, an Australian government initiative that rates the energy efficiency of new homes, renovations, alterations, and extensions.
Its goal is to encourage better home design that reduces energy use, improves year-round comfort, and lowers your power bills.
NatHERS provides a star rating from 0 to 10, based on how well your home’s design performs in terms of thermal comfort, that is, how it keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer with minimal reliance on heating and cooling.
What factors influence your NatHERS rating?
Your NatHERS star rating is based on several elements, including:
Your home’s orientation and layout
The construction materials used
Quality of insulation and glazing
Window placement and shading
Your local climate zone
It’s important to note that NatHERS currently focuses on the building envelope, not your appliances. That means solar panels, batteries, and air-conditioning units are not yet factored into the star rating.
What is “Whole of home” and why is it a big deal?
The NatHERS Whole of Home approach is a new initiative being phased into the National Construction Code (NCC) from 2023 onwards (depending on your state or territory). This upgrade goes beyond just the shell of your home and begins to account for things like:
Appliance energy use (heating, cooling, hot water)
Solar PV systems
Battery storage solutions
It offers a much more realistic view of your home’s overall energy performance, and recognises the full investment you’re making to create a comfortable and energy-efficient home.
At Riverwolf Homes, we welcome this shift. It’s a smarter, more holistic way to build, one that validates the thought, care, and expense homeowners put into sustainability.
Why NatHERS matters when building or renovating
A high NatHERS rating isn’t just about ticking compliance boxes. It can:
Save you money on heating and cooling costs
Improve indoor comfort year-round
Add long-term value to your home
Reduce your environmental impact
As regulations evolve, it’s becoming increasingly important to design with NatHERS in mind from the very beginning, not as an afterthought.
Work with a builder who designs for efficiency
Achieving a 7-star or higher energy rating requires early planning and smart decisions, which is why we love being involved in the design phase from the start. At Riverwolf Homes, we help clients:
Understand NatHERS requirements and how they apply to their home
Collaborate with building designers and assessors to hit targets
Set realistic budgets that reflect sustainable choices
